Rodizio Rico is an authentic Brazilian Churrascaria restaurant in The Cube, in Birmingham. It also has some sister restaurants down in London. I thought when I first read about this place that it sounded like a great concept – an all you can eat affair with a buffet of cold and hot salads and other Brazilian dishes and then ‘passadors’ sweeping past the tablets with various skewered cuts of meat offering them all to you, depending on whether your card is turned to green (give me more!) or red (rest please!).A carnivores delight!
Unfortunately, in reality the experience we had was not great.
On the positive side, the service was swift and friendly, the cocktail list looked great and a there was a good choice of draft and bottled beers and wines from around the world.
The salad and sides bar had its ups and downs, some of the cold salads were tasty and a bit unusual – take the ‘carrot and pineapple salad’, surprisingly good, and decent caesar salad. But some were also bland and boring. The hot sides and ‘street food’ dishes again, some ok (rice balls, cheese bread, chicken stew) and some disappointing. As my husband quite accurately commented, it was strangely reminiscent of a not quite up to scratch all inclusive resort buffet!
Then the main event – and the worst. The vast majority of the meat carved at our table was seriously overcooked to the point of being inedible, dry and flavourless. With the exception of one cut of beef, that I think we caught fresh off the spit roast. Unfortuntaly, the meat being the main attraction for this restaurant, this rather ruined the meal for us.
We did mention after we had paid our concerns to the manager who offered to refund some of our bill. We are not a couple who complain readily, I think we have done 2 or 3 times in our eating lives together (11yrs!) – in fact I go out of my way to not complain, but my husband felt strongly enough about this to say something. The cost of eating here in the evening is £25.00 per head for the food (salad bar and meat) all you can eat with drinks and deserts on top. Personally, even if I had enjoyed the meat I feel this a bit steep.
There are positives to this restaurant, something different in Birmingham, but for now, for us, it remains purely a great concept.
