Walking along the seafront on our first day in St Ives whilst taking in the gorgeous views of the harbour we were scouting out places along the seafront to eat. When we saw the sign for The Rum and Crab Shack it sounded too intriguing to resist, so we booked a table for the following night. My husband is a huge fan of rum, particularly his favoured spiced rum, so he was really looking forward to trying a few off their extensive list. The restaurant had a Caribbean twist to it, and as the name would suggest – a lot of crab on the menu!
We were not really sure what to expect from this place, but everything was superb from being shown to the table to when we left. The staff were really friendly and willing to talk at length about the food, the rum and anything else in between.
The decor was fab – great bar space, booth style tables, lots of wood, barrells, chests and great murals on the walls, really giving the feel of being in a beach shack somewhere on the other side of the world.
Food wise for starters we went for the clam and smoked haddock chowder, and the tempura squid. We both absolutely loved our starters – for my husband who had the chowder he thought the fish was cooked perfectly and there was a great depth of flavour. My squid was simply the best I had tasted in years. It was so tender, batter light as air and a perfect homemade chilli sauce for dipping. Some other starters on offer included; crab cakes, whole crab claws, cornish sardines, and rum and crab soup.
Moving on to the main courses, Lee decided to have what seemed the ‘signature’ dish of the restaurant, the Crab Shack Burger (a whole crispy soft shell crab) in a burger, with homemade coleslaw. I went for the Jambalaya which had huge chunks of ling, crab meat and prawns. We raved about them both – delicious! A few other main courses available included a whole brown or spider crab complete with tools for its’ destruction, gumbo, and a cockle mussel and clam steam pot.
Puddings were also really tasty, although maybe not quite the calibre of the savoury stuff; choices included Key Lime Pie, Rum Baba, and our particular two choices, Waffles with a Toffee sauce and Missisippi Mud Pie, both served with locally made Vanilla Ice Cream.
Over the course of the meal and afterwards, we tried 4 of the rums on offer; The Angostura ( a 7yr old golden rum from Trindad), Red Leg (spiced with vanilla and ginger and named after a caribbean crab!), Ron Aguere caramelo (a mixture of rum and caramel toffee from the Canaries) and the Chairmans’ Reservce from St Lucia.
This was a brilliant meal; 3 courses, plus the rum, a beer and a cider cost not much more than £60! A bargain. If your ever in St Ives definitely check this place out, its a gem.
