Review: Rick Stein’s The Seafood Restaurant, Padstow Cornwall

Eating at The Seafood Restaurant was one of the eagerly awaited meals of our Foodie holiday to Cornwall. P1070895

The restaurant itself has a great harbour front location, and was a lot bigger than we were expecting. There was a great atmosphere in the evening, and the restaurant was light and airy. An oyster bar in the middle of the restaurant also a lovely feature.

Service was very friendly, but overall was a bit slow and it felt like there was no particular waiter/waitress assigned to particular tables which may have contributed to this.

We started with Crisp Smoked Mackerel with Green Mango and Green Papaya Salad, with Thai holy basil, sliced shallots, carrot, peanuts and birds eye chilli and a Salad of Lobster, Avocado, Green Beans and Foie-Gras.

I could have ordered most of the starters on the menu they all sounded fantastic, and it was a tough choice but my love for the Asian influence won out! The mackerel dish was really delicious – tangy, a great combination of hot sweet sour and salt and the fish cooked to perfection. The lobster and foie gras was also lovely, a really interesting combination.

For mains I was torn between another Asian influenced dish, Madras Fish Curry of Sea Bass, Tomato and Tamarind and a slightly more traditional Fish Pie. The Pie got the green light, for me, being sceptical of such simple things wanted to see how the fish master did it! Hubby had the Roast Tronçon of Turbot with Hollandaise Sauce, again for the price (£35) he was expecting something out of this world.

After eating the fish pie, although I could have nothing bad to say about it, I wished I’d have had the Curry! I was just a little bored by it. Lee enjoyed his turbot, but again for £35, he thought it could have been better, the hollandaise had separated a bit because it had been put straight on to a very hot plate. It just didn’t blow us away.

Both our pudding were delicious…..when we got them. Unfortunately the waitress must have misheard/forgotten Lee’s order as when they arrived, his was not the right thing. They took it away to get him the right thing –  a Strawberry Soufflé with White Chocolate Mousse and Strawberry Coulis – but left my dessert (Hot Chocolate Fondant with Salt Caramel and Banoffee Ice Cream) on the table without offering to take it away and bring a fresh one when Lee’s was ready – a pretty rookie mistake in our book. This meant that by the time Lee’s arrived, I had eaten mine! Having said this, the fondant was one of best I’ve ever eaten. They did take the price of one dessert of the bill without us asking or complaining about anything, but neglected to tell us this until they bought the bill at the end!

We had coffee which came with petit fours – a very nice mini bakewell tart and chocolate truffle, but the lemon madeleine was pretty dry.

We knew the restaurant is not ‘fine dining’ as such, and although the food was lovely and tasty on the whole, it just felt a little bit sterile and lacked that ‘Je ne sais quoi’. It just was not quite special enough to go top of the list for a return visit.
