Readers of this blog have probably by now realised I love Asian inspired food, be that Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese etc so I am continuously trying to persuade hubby to accompany me to restaurants of this type even though it’s not his preferred cuisine. The other weekend I bribed him with a trip to the cinema if we could go and eat Thai first. He accepted. We decided to check out Thai Edge in Brindley place. Whenever I walk past it always looks busy and lively inside which I always take as a good sign. Thai Edge has a few branches around the country, and advertises itself as authentic Thai cuisine, the Birmingham branch even boasts a AA rosette.
When we arrived the service seemed a little bit all over the place, some members of staff didn’t seem to have a clue what they were doing and it took a while for anyone to bring us any menus. Having said that everyone was very polite and friendly. There were some crackers and sweet chilli sauce on the table to nibble on whilst looking at the menu which were quite tasty, nice and crisp with quite a kick to them.
For starters I ordered the YAM MA MOUNG; Green mango salad tossed in a spicy Thai dressing. I adore mango so thought this was a good choice. I was a little surprised when it arrived – although the mango was sliced into match sticks, the skin had been left on which made each mouthful quite chewy and hard to eat. Now I’m no Thai food specialist, so this may well be traditional, but I’d not come across it like this before in other Thai places. I wasnt that keen I have to say. It was also mega spicy – now I like spicy, but this was too much after a while even for me. Lee had the POH PIA TOD; Crispy spring roll stuffed with vermicelli and white cabbage, served with plum sauce. Lee was a little indifferent about his starter, feeling they were a bit bland but otherwise pleasant. He did mention the batter around the outside was nice and thin and crispy.
Moving on to main courses we were hoping for slightly better. I had chosen GAI PREW WAAN; Thai style sweet and sour chicken with tomato, cucumber, onion, red and green peppers and pineapple while Lee had NUAE NAM MAN HOI; Stir-fried beef in oyster sauce with mushrooms, red and green peppers, ginger and spring onions. The taste and consistency of the sauce of my sweet and sour was lovely and went great with the KOW NEAOW; Sticky Thai glutinous rice we both had chosen. The chicken pieces themselves I wasn’t keen on, they were overcooked and dry and just didn’t taste quite right. Again Lee felt the flavour of his dish was good and the vegetables nice and chunky with a bit of crunch to them still, but felt the meat cooking and quality let it down.
Overall I’m sad to say we weren’t very impressed with Thai Edge. There wasn’t anything to complain about we just didn’t much like the food. I don’t think we will be hurrying back anytime soon when there are much better places for Thai in Brum.
