The Fig and Olive is a new restaurant & bar in the Sutton Coldfield area. It’s situated inside the Coppice Garden Centre, near Middleton. It’s open for dinner as well and breakfast, brunch and lunch. The restaurant and bar area is large and open plan, and there also a lovely outside area that opens out from wide glass doors for alfresco eating. The decor I thought was beautiful, with gorgeous red brickwork, combined with rustic wooden and slate grey tables, and lots of feature pieces, such as large iron clocks on the wall and a giant tortoise statue in the garden!
We went along for a mid morning brunch on a sunday morning, and we’ve plans to go back for dinner very soon. We did try to get a table a couple of Fridays ago a bit last-minute on the same afternoon but they were fully booked, which is testament to the success of the place so far considering it’s not been open all that long. It was a beautiful morning and we managed to get a table outside. There was a bit of confusion at the start – we waited about 10 minutes before anyone came over to us, and then they asked to take our order before anyone had bought us any menus – but after this the service was exemplary. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed and we thought the food was very fairly priced for brunch.
I went for Eggs Benedict (surprise surprise!) whilst Lee had the American Pancakes with Blueberries, Creme Fraiche and Maple Syrup. The Eggs Benedict may not have been the prettiest or most well presented I have ever seen, but the eggs were perfect and the hollandaise had a great tang to it. The streaky bacon was salty and smoky and went really well, although hubby would argue that Eggs Benedict should only be made with ham, or it should be called something else. I love it with bacon thought. I’m sure this debate will rage on for a while. Lee’s pancakes had a great flavour, tons of juicy blueberries and a great freshness from the creme fraiche, but he felt the pancakes themselves were too thick, making them too heavy and floury. I loved the little porcelain pourer that maple syrup was served in – very quirky!
We really enjoyed brunch and are definitely looking forward to see what they can offer in the evening.
