Review: Bodega, Birmingham

images

Bodega is a modern ‘cantina’ in Birmingham that brings South American inspired cuisine, vibrant colours and a party atmosphere. With a restaurant upstairs and the Sugar Loaf Bar downstairs it’s the perfect place to spend an evening out.

They have an extensive list of fabulous cocktails, all with a twist of originality and many bottled and draught beers to choose from too. Lee tried the Peruvian Cusquena and the Bramha. I had a couple of cocktails – a tequila based Dia du Los Muertos and a Pisco based La Vua Elegente. Both were delicious. Service was great, really friendly and accommodating.

The menu consisted of street food and lighter dishes as well as main courses. Hubby and I decided to have a selection of street food and light bites to share. We went for;

  • Pork and Chimichurri Tacos
  • Chicken Chipotle Quesadillas
  • Red Wine Glazed Chorizo
  • Papas Chorreadas
  • Ceviche Salad
  • Frigoles Negros
  • Spicy Slaw

The standout couple of dishes for me were the Quesadillas which had a subtle smoky flavour with hints of heat, and the sweet sticky rich sauce which surrounded the chorizo. Hubby really enjoyed the black beans which had deep layers of flavour and the potatoes with their gooey cheesy topping flecked with fresh hits of spring onion and chilli. He didn’t share my love of the chorizo, feeling it was too tough and I thought the ceviche salad could have benefited by having the sea bass chopped up into smaller pieces, but the taste was great. The tacos again had a really amazing flavour, but we felt we a tad on the dry side, and could have had more of the tangy chimichurri.

For dessert we shared a portion of churros which were lovely and light and rounded off the meal nicely.

Churros

We really enjoyed this meal, most of the plates of food were really delicious and full of flavour, although a couple slightly missed the mark for us. It was extremely good value for money we thought and a great atmosphere for a fun and light-hearted evening.
