Review: Yo! Sushi, Birmingham Selfridges

YO-Sushi-SinglehiI had never set foot inside a Yo! Sushi before the year 2013.  From speaking to my friends, I think I was one of the only ones. It had never really appealed to me. I like sushi quite a lot, but I wouldn’t want to sit down and eat only that for a meal. And on top of that I’m not the biggest fan of salmon. (unless it’s smoked). Little did I know that Yo! sushi provided lots of yummy dishes that do not contain raw fish! (thanks Wendy for the tip-off!) Our nearest branch is in the Selfridges food hall in Birmingham’s Bullring. We frequent the food hall with regularity, always browsing for delicacies we can’t afford but always eat at the Thai/Chinese area (love their duck salad). One day there was a huge queue for the chinese, so we took our chance at sushi.

I must say from the moment I started pulling those little plates off the conveyor belt I was hooked. Like a kid in a sweet shop, I wanted to try them all! Luckily hubby was there with a dubious glare and the odd arm restraint to stop me running up too large a bill. I like the way you can order some hot/special dishes that aren’t on the belt as well. Since our first visit we have been back several times and have certainly developed our favourite plates.

Plates are colour coded which correspond to a price, so you can try to guide how much you spend. IMG_3257I tend to like the special yellow plates a lot (typically these are the most expensive!) They do some great deals, for example ‘Blue Mondays’ where every plate on the belt is the price of a blue plate (beware though, this isn’t the case if you order something not going round on the belt) There are so many little plates to choose from…have a look at their menu here

Below is a selection of our favourite dishes we had when we went a few weeks ago.

Chicken Goyza with a Soy and Vingear Dipping Sauce

Salmon & Tobiko Tartar
Salmon, yuzu tobiko and salmon keta roe tartar with a coriander dressing.

Pumpkin Korroke
Crispy Japanese breaded pumpkin croquettes with a fruity sauce

These are hubby’s favourites. The filling is so creamy and the sauce tangy and delicious.

IMG_3250

Beef & Garlic Teriyaki
Crispy coated slices of premium beef glazed in a garlic teriyaki sauce.

IMG_3249

Vegetable Yakisoba
Pan fried Japanese noodles in a mildly spiced tangy sauce with vegetables

We also like the Vegetable Firecracker Rice – 2 staples to bulk up the meal a little.

IMG_3252

Coriander Tuna
slices of seared coriander crusted tuna loin

Tuna is probably my favourite type of fish to have as sushi. Such a clean fresh meaty flavour.

Beef Tataki
Premium black pepper seared beef with coriander dressing

My ultimate favourite – the coriander dressing is one of the tastiest things I’ve had, I’d love to know their secret recipe for it!

I am happy to say I am a Yo! Sushi convert. It’s great for a quick bite to eat for lunch, or after shopping, although I’m not sure I would head to it as a ‘destination’ restaurant.
