Review: Don Diego, Sutton Coldfield

IMG_3403Don Diego in Sutton Coldfield is part of the Authentic Tapas Group which was founded in 2009 by Alfonso Yufera-Ruiz, who hails from Gran Canaria. The group opened 2 tapas restaurants in Bridgnorth and Shrewsbury back in 2009 and 2010, and then in 2012, Don Diego was their third to open. The group is family run and prides themselves on authentic Spanish fare delivered in a relaxed atmosphere.

The exterior

I love tapas, and eating lots of small plates of food really suits my indecisive nature, as I’ve mentioned previously! I’ve yet to discover a good local tapas place in Birmingham or the immediate surrounding area so was looking forward and very hopeful for this meal.We visited on a Friday night, and when I booked about 1 week before they were already full at the peak times. The service we received was really good, friendly staff and I liked that a lot of the staff were also Spanish.

The bar area

We chose a lovely carafe of Rioja to go with our meal which was a fantastic wine and really reasonably priced. The waiter recommended 2-3 dishes per person plus some bread which is what we went for, although we ended up ordering even more bread as we needed something to mop up all the delicious sauces! The menu was quite extensive – lots of choice of dishes including plenty of vegetarian options.

The dishes we chose were;

  • Carrillera al Vino Tinto – slow cooked cheek of pork in red wine served with potato
  • Habas a la Catalana – Broad Beans with Spanish Sausage and Jamon
  • Gambas al Pil Pil – Tiger Prawns cooked in garlic and Chilli Oil
  • Pescaditos Fritos – Deep Fried Whitebait
  • Patatas Mixtas – Crispy friend potatoes with a garlic and lemon aoili and a red pepper sauce
  • Garbanzos con Espinacas – Chick Peas cooked with spinach onion cumin and garlic

The bread we had was served with a tomato and cumin dip and also a garlic aioli.

Bread with Tomato and Cumin Dip

I can honestly say we loved this meal. All the dishes were rustic and full of flavour, with emphasis going on cooking really good ingredients simply and beautifully. The stand outs were the melt in the mouth pork cheeks – simply sublime, as well as the prawns that were perfectly cooked with a perfect balance of garlic and chilli. The sauces that came with the potatoes and the tomato and cumin dip with the bread were also outstanding. For me I felt the chick pea dish lacked the hits of flavour of the other dishes and this was the only one that I probably wouldn’t order if I went again.

For a taste of Authentic Spain in Brum, you could do a hell of a lot worse than  trip to Don Diego. Great tasting rustic food at great prices. I’d book in advance – they’re pretty popular!
