Review: Dinner by Stacie Stewart

After briefly meeting and interviewing Stacie Stewart at the BBC Good Food Show last Winter we were interested to see that she was staging a Pop Up in a great local pub near us The Butlers Arms (see our review here). We decided to go along to check out some of her food. She originally found fame on Masterchef, and now has her own bakery and has bought out her own baking book, Stacie Bakes.

She concocted a 5 course menu which included a dish that she cooked to get her into the finals on Masterchef, venison with chocolate red wine sauce. Here is the full menu for the evening:

Cocktail on arrival: Blood Orange Martini

Watercress Soup with Quails Egg

Tempura Cod Cheeks with Asian Slaw and Nam Jim Dressing

Pork and Duck Terrine with Sloe Jelly and Newcastle Brown Ale Sourdough

Tea Smoked Venison with Braised Shoulder, Celeriac Mash, Parsnips and Chocolate Red Wine Sauce

Banana Bread Pudding with Vanilla Bean Ice-crem and Bourbon Caramel Sauce

The menu sounding very appealing and I hoped it would live up to expectations. Service throughout the night was friendly and accommodating as ever from Chris and his team. The cocktails went down a treat and I swiftly followed this with a few glasses of their very reasonably priced Prosecco.

My favourite dish of the night was by far and away the pudding. It’s no surprise that the first book she has brought out is a baking one if everything is as good as that bread pudding. Other particular plaudits went to the perfectly cooked cod cheeks with a staggeringly hot dressing, a gorgeous sloe jelly and very good sourdough bread that accompanied the terrine and the subtle tea flavouring of the venison and the chocolate red wine sauce.

I’m afraid the quality of the photos isn’t too great in this post – I’ll blame the martinis and prosecco I think! A great night was had by all, so if you see that Stacie is cooking at an event near you, don’t hesitate to check it out!
