The restaurant on the 4th floor of Selfridges has recently undergone a bit of a revamp and the brasserie is now being operated by Searcy’s, famed for their London champagne bars. The brasserie does indeed boast a Moet&Chandon Champagne bar offering a wide range of bubbles, as well as cocktails.
We took a little break from shopping on a Friday to grab a bite to eat. The welcome was warm and the place was bustling. I really like the decor, and the tables by the edge of the balcony gave great views over the Bullring below. The are open for brunch, lunch and dinner as well as offering afternoon tea (which I didn’t know and hence will be checking out soon!)
I decided to try out one of their non alcoholic cocktails, the Passion Must, and this was gorgeous – so refreshing – a mix of fresh passion fruit, apple, pomegranate and lime. Alongside the normal menu there was a specials menu. We both chose starters from this specials menu, me a Chicken Liver Parfait with Caramelised Onion Chutney and Toasted Brioche and Lee the Ham Hock Terrine with Carrot and Apple Pureés and Pickled Vegetables. Both starters were very very good. The parfait was really smooth and a lovely pink colour – the sign of a good chicken liver parfait. The pureés and pickled veg were a nice textural addition to a good ham hock. We would later say this course was definitely the highlight of the meal.
Lee chose the Searcys aged Lake District cheeseburger with fries for his main while I had the Slow cooked duck leg, soy and honey, Asian salad. The burger was decent in Lee’s opinion, but not fantastic, mostly because the bread bun was so dry it just kind of crumbled and fell apart. Good quality chips though and a cute addition of a mini mustard bottle saved it. My duck leg was great – the meat fell off the bone nicely. The salad was good too, with a good mix of veg and a sticky dressing. The salad was served warm though, which although wasn’t a bad thing, I had expected it to be cold so it threw me a little and I maintain I think it would have been better off served cold. There were other tasty sounding offerings on the menu, including Line caught monkfish, lemongrass and quinoa green curry and Squid, feta and chorizo burger with polenta chips and dill mayonnaise, have a look here at the menu if you wish.
As it was Valentines Day when we went (yes I know this post is a little delayed!!!), the brasserie had a special pud on offer, a sharing thing for two people. It was being pushed by all the staff in the place, and looked pretty good coming out to other people so we went for it. In all honesty, we wished we had listened to our full stomachs and left it at the main courses. It consisted of a milk chocolate mousse encased in dark chocolate, toasted marshmallows with chocolate soil, freeze-dried raspberries and pistachios and a shot of raspberry coulis. Now all that sounds great, but we didn’t really enjoy it that much. The mousse was ok, but the chocolate shell very hard to break. The pistachios were crunchy and good for texture and the marshmallows also good, but the raspberry coulis was sharp and full of seeds which wasn’t particularly pleasant.
Overall our savoury food was lovely and despite the hiccup of dessert I wouldn’t hesitate to go back again whilst shopping – a nice relaxing place away from the hum drum and chaos of the ‘queue and eat’ sushi and burgers of the bottom floor of Selfridges.
