Review: Oscar’s Bistro, Leamington Spa

Leamington Spa is currently one of my favourite towns to visit. It has a great mix of high street shops and independents as well as an abundance of places to eat, you can read more in my post about the town here.

On the most recent of our visits we sought out lunch at somewhere recommend by a fellow twitterer, Oscar’s French Bistro. They have a great value set menu for lunch with a fair few choices.

Immedietly when we set foot through the door we just knew this was going to be a hit. A quaint small little space, sunlight streaming through the windows, french style artwork on the walls and a smiling French Maitre’D who couldn’t do enough for you. Husband Lee was in his element. Good hearty French Bistro style food is his ultimate heaven.

We settled down to look at the menus and were greeted with some proper crusty French Baguette while we looked.

For starter I went for the Potted Pork & Quail, Sweet Onion, Cornichons, Melba Toast. This was simple but ever so tasty. Sometimes it’s refreshing to see great ingredients just treated well with no extra fuss. Lee had the Vol au Vent of Sautéed Chicken Livers, Madeira Sauce & Leaf Spinach which he thoroughly enjoyed, perfect livers and great balanced madeira sauce. He was rather annoyed that he had already scoffed all the french bread so he couldn’t mop up his sauce!

Moving on to the mains I had the Dry-Aged 6oz Rump Steak with Café de Paris Butter and Chips. I knew the steak would be good quality as they use the renowned butcher Aubrey Allen but it really was one of the best steaks I’ve had in recent times. I think this was compounded by the fantastic butter, and oven roasted tomatoes that it came with which were deliciously sweet. Lee went for the Guinea Fowl Ballontine with braised Puy Lentils & Red Wine Jus. The meat was juicy and succulent and the lentils and sauce both had a great depth of flavour.

We skipped desert as I had my eye on a piece of cake later on in Vinteas. We had a great relaxing and traditional lunch. A place where you could easily wile away several hours with good food, wine and company. Another great find!

Have you been to Oscars Bistro or anywhere else in Leamington? I’d love to know your thoughts.
