I was recently invited to visit the Lost & Found in Birmingham City Centre. They have recently launched a new menu and thus I was keen to see what they had on offer.
I’ve frequented the Lost & Found a few times for drinks, and I already knew that their cocktails were top-notch, and some of the best in Brum, so would their food live up to the same standards? If I’m honest we’d heard a few mixed reviews a while ago about the food (including by the infamous Giles Coren) but as a firm believer in not forming an opinion before you’ve tried something for yourself I was looking forward to visiting.
I really like the set up of the Lost & Found, the botanical decor, fantastic high ceilings. It’s a lovely place to have a drink or a bite to eat, and if you can bag yourself a booth, even better.
Firstly let’s have a little look at the cocktails – I went for a Pear Partridge which was a really phenomenal cocktail in my opinion. I can’t quite remember what it consisted of, but do try one if you get a chance. Lee had a Rum Old Fashioned, which was right up his street as well. I’ve also recently tried their Apple Cosmo, also a really good drink.
Moving on to the food. I was spoilt for choice looking at the list of starters, and found it really difficult to choose as so many sounded appealing. I eventually settled on the Smoked Mackerel Paté with Lemon Creme Fraiche, Pickled Cucumber and Olive Oil Toast. This was a great starter – the paté was smooth and creamy and full of flavour, served in a kilner jar topped with a lemony creme fraiche which was nice and sharp to cut through the paté. The pickled cucumber was a nice touch and seemed like it had been pickled pretty well. Lee went for the Salted Corned Beef with Brown Sauce, Gherkins and Soda Bread. Again this went down fantastically, something slightly different and the brown sauce was a treat. We asked the staff about the brown sauce to see if was homemade, which it most definitely was! This was fantastic and sad in equal measure, great for the Lost & Found for making a fab product but sad for us as we wouldn’t be able to buy it anywhere…! Presentation wise, the use of boards, kilner jars, mini fryer baskets etc was quite prominent throughout the meal, which I quite like but some may not.
Moving on to the main courses. For these we both went for something which I guess would be deemed a ‘pub classic’. This being said, it’s always a good comparison point between similar establishments. I had the Lost & Found Burger, to which I added Pulled Pork. It also came with gouda cheese in a brioche bun, with homemade chips, coleslaw and a tomato and chilli jam.We were told that the burger recipe was a new creation of the head chef, and included Guinness amongst the ingredients. I couldn’t find fault with the burger, it was juicy and served a touch pink. The tomato jam was homemade and went with it well, as was the slightly mustardy coleslaw. The brioche bun (very on trend eh?) was toasted nicely and the chips were perfect. A thoroughly decent burger in my opinion. Again Lee’s Fish & Chips was of good quality. Crispy, not too heavy batter, good chips, flavoursome homemade tartare sauce. For dishes like burgers and fish and chips, it’s the small things done really well that make the dish stand out, and they did them pretty well for us that night at the Lost & Found.
We were struggling with pretty full stomachs at this point, the portion sizes are quite large! Because of this we chose what looked like a couple of the lighter deserts to try. I loved the sound of the Vanilla Panacotta with Rum Poached Pineapple and Pina Colada Sorbet, while Lee chose the Glazed Lemon Pot. The desserts were both ok but didn’t hit the heights of the starters which were the standout 2 dishes of the night. Having said that though, the Pina Colada Sorbet wonderfully refreshing and tasty.
We really enjoyed our meal at the Lost& Found. The prices are very reasonable, the food good quality and the service enthusiastic. (And have I mentioned the cocktails are fabulous!) Given some of the negative press we had heard, we were pleasantly surprised and we wouldn’t hesitate to eat there again. It’s not fine dining, but it’s not trying to be, so if you want some good hearty food, give it a go soon.
