Oh this post has been a long time coming, so apologies for that, but on the up side, it does take us back to those hazy days of summer 2014, so enjoy! The Whittington Arms is a lovely large country pub near Lichfield in Staffordshire. On a stunning summer evening a we went across for dinner, to lounge in the late evening sun and check out their menu.
We started off with a couple of drinks – classic Pimms and an Elderflower Bellini, both of which were perfect for a summer evening and both could have been drunk in copious quantities!
The menu had some interesting looking choices, including a lamb carpaccio and seemed well priced. We shared a starter of duck liver parfait, with fruit chutney and brioche. The brioche was lovely and soft and sweet and it was a good tangy chutney, the parfait it self was decent, but the layer of butter on the top was too thick for my liking.
For mains Lee had a half chicken, marinated in lemon and Garlic with fries and Aoili. He thought this was a thoroughly decent plate of food, moist chicken and good fries. My Crispy Duck Salad had lovely textures and flavours, but was a little too heavy handed on the ginger. Presentation of the food left a little to be desired, but all in all a thoroughly decent pub meal.
Service was pretty slow on the whole, we waited 50 minutes between starter and main, but they were pretty busy. On this occasion it wasn’t a big issue as we were contentedly sitting watching the sun slowly setting over the Lichfield countryside!
