El Borracho Del Oro is the latest opening from Alfonso and Emma Yufera-Ruiz, owners of the Authentic Tapas Group. It was always their dream to open in the beautiful leafy suburb of Edgbaston, and 10 years on from when they met, their dream is now very much a reality.
We have been to one of their other restaurants, Don Diego in Sutton Coldfield on numerous occasions, and love it so were very much looking forward to going to El Borracho Del Oro. Emma was kind enough to invite us to their launch party a few weeks ago, and we got a taste of Alfonso’s delicious Paella, so not long after we went down to try out the menu.
El Borracho has a large open plan dining room, as well as a tapas bar, the latter of which doesn’t take reservations so perfect for popping in on a whim. We sat in the dining room, where there is the choice of their main menu or tapas.
On this occasion we went for the tapas. They have a Spanish focused drinks list, with Mahou beer on draught as well as bottled Estrella and a lovely choice of wines. Lee chose a glass of the Astil Tinta Fina whilst I went for a sangria. The sangria was beautiful and packed with fruit – a jug of this would have gone down very easily indeed.
The tapas we chose were:
- Jamon Croquetas
- Calamari with Squid Ink Alioli
- Empanadillas with slow cooked Oxtail
- Butterbeans with Chorizo
- Morcilla with Roasted Apple & Smoked Cheese
- Patatas Bravas
- Galician Bread with Alioli
I really found it hard to find anything at all to nitpick with. All the dishes were hearty and delicious. Of particular note, the calamari was perfectly tender, and I was so happy to see it come tentacles and all – just how it should be! The croquetas and the oxtail empanadillas were my favourite two dishes – the oozing inside of the rich jamon croquetas was sublime.
A thoroughly enjoyable Spanish feast. Our bill for all the above came in at just under £55. El Borracho is a great addition to the dining scene in Birmingham, and a cut above many of the recent openings the city has seen – worth a trip to find out for yourself!
